Design trends seem to come and go faster than ever before these days. Where some kitchen trends used to become outdated 10 years after a renovation, now they can go out of style in only two or three, which is a massive disappointment if you’ve just spent several thousands of dollars on your renovation. There is a reason so many design professionals advise people to be wary of fads and trends in interior design; it’s not a matter of pretentiousness; it’s actually a matter of making wise investments, getting the best value, and remaining happy with your renovation for many years to come.
Timeless renovations are the way to go, but how do you make them that way? We have a few ideas:
- Consider hardwood floors. Floors can make a world of difference in the functionality and appearance of your space. While there are many types of floors to choose from, hardwood floors won’t ever go out of style. After all, hardwood floors have been around for hundreds of years, and hardwood flooring that is well maintained can even last for over a century. What’s more timeless than that?
- Combine the old and the new. Your space won’t look like it’s from a particular era if you incorporate design elements from several different eras. It can create beautiful contrast as well.
- Edit your design. “Less is more” is a good rule of thumb for renovations and interior design in general. You don’t want to overwhelm your space with crowded furniture or too many ornate details, for instance. Do less, but make sure the renovations you do go for have greater impact.
- Incorporate trends carefully. You don’t have to avoid trends entirely. Just be careful about how you use them. Save trending colors or styles for accent pieces like lamps and cushions, but stick to timeless options for furniture, finishes, and expensive renovations.
