Flickering fluorescent lights, stained upholstery, uncomfortable chairs, and an unfriendly atmosphere—office spaces are notorious for their blank walls, cold cubicles, and poor design choices. But you’re not doomed to an unattractive work area. Following a few simple office design “dos and don’ts” can help you create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere for both your clients and employees.

Do
- Ask your employees. Even though it’s normal to be client-focused, your employees spend far more time in your office space than your clients do. Asking your employees what office design updates would make them the most comfortable can result in a happier, more efficient workplace, ultimately creating a better experience for your clients as well.
- Choose furniture that works in multiple arrangements. While you may have the perfect layout now, things can change. Rather than choosing one bulky L-shaped couch that will only fit one way in your space, consider opting for smaller chairs, giving you constant opportunities for fresh looks and arrangements.
Don’t
- Sacrifice quality. Whether it’s a stylish but unsteady new desk chair or a tempting price tag, never sacrifice the quality of your furnishings for any reason. Inexpensive office design elements that look good today but will be worn and faded in a short while won’t help with your long-term office design goals.
- Do it alone. Even if you have a good idea of what you want your office design to look like, don’t try to tackle everything on your own. An experienced interior designer can offer a fresh perspective and new ideas on how to better achieve your goals.
