Having a small, independent living space can come with a lot of benefits, whether you’re frequently hosting your in-laws over the holidays or just want to make some extra cash through Airbnb. But when it comes to garage conversion, basement apartments, or a garden suite, how do you choose which one is right for you?
Garage Conversion
Garage remodelling is a popular choice for both auxiliary units and single-room expansions of living space. Garage units are “converted,” as they make use of an existing area of the home not originally intended as living space.
If you don’t have much room in your yard to build a detached unit, or you want to cut costs by using a preexisting structure, garage conversion is an excellent choice.
Garden Suite
If you want your auxiliary unit to have a greater feeling of independence than a garage apartment, then “detached” units are a better choice for you. Complete with a kitchenette, bedroom, bathroom, living area, and separate entrance, garden suites offer all the comforts of a full-scale home. Guests can feel comfortable in the privacy offered by a garden suite while staying just a short walk away from the back door of your home.
Basement Apartments
Unlike garden suites, which do not share any of the home’s original construction, basement apartments are “internal” units, which make use of an existing area within the home. While basement apartments do not offer the same sense of complete separation and privacy provided by garden suites with a separate entrance, guests in your basement apartment can still come and go freely without disturbing the activities of residents upstairs.
