Vintages Trends Making A Comeback In Modern Homes

Vintage a word that translates to ‘Of Age’, gives an open-ending meaning which can be interpretated in many different ways. Many vintage items are often either mid-century-modern, or related to bygone pop culture, or fashion trends. Vintage trends often make some type of comeback and now in the year of 2024 we’re seeing more and more homes styled with vintage influence and decor. This week’s blog post we’re discussing the different vintage design features making a comeback in modern homes!

Its Back!

Yes vintage design has made it’s way back into homes as some people are moving on from the minimalist design trend and slowly allowing vintage trends back in moderate to extreme ways. Vintage has a long list of items and designs that create this style- going back from the 80s, 70s, 60s, and 50s. In the recent years you’ve probably noticed more home stores not only carrying vintage items but stores being named and themed for specifically selling vintage items.

Walls

There are 4 main vintage themes we’ve seen rise in trend for many peoples interior walls- these include 70s hues, wood paneling, and bold wallpaper.

Let’s start with 70s hues, theses paint colours and choices were all about bringing the outdoors in and creating a cozy, grounded ambiance. Complemented by sunny oranges and rustic browns, these organic hues evoked a sense of rustic charm and bohemian flair. We’re currently seeing a trend of people bringing back these colours throughout their homes to not only brighten it up but also to feel connected to nature.

Wood paneling has made a huge come back in feature walls for many people that want a easy DIY project for their home. Wainscoting is a general term for wall paneling, while beadboard is a specific style that uses vertical panels. Both of these styles can be used and painted any colour which makes them more popular as many people want something simple done to a room that adds some type of dimension.

Bold Wallpaper, yes bold wallpaper is making a big comeback. Florals, geometric shapes and dark tones are being chose for feature/statement walls in many rooms. We’re also seeing a large increase of people using wallpaper as the backing of shelves in storage areas such as pantries and closets.

Furniture

Vintage furniture has also made it’s way back into our modern homes, we’re seeing more furniture styled with reference to the art deco decade, and more repurposed materials and darker fabrics making a comeback.

Art Deco Furniture -Art deco furniture is characterized by symmetrical, clean, rectilinear lines. It combines traditional craftsmanship with modern machinery and materials. We’re seeing more of these designs in furniture pieces and sets in modern homes. Mixing and matching these pieces with more traditional modern pieces has been a new trend we’ve seen more of.

Repurposed Materials -Repurposed furniture is furniture given a second lease on life—whether reupholstered, refinished, repainted, or redone. Now with inflation we’re seeing this trend more than ever as many people don’t want to spend money on new items but will spend money on products to repurpose these items and bring them back to life in a way that suits their style.

Kitchens

One main room we’re seeing vintage items trending again is the kitchen- from coloured cabinets and kitchen islands, to retro appliances and checkered flooring patterns.

Having colourful cabinets in kitchens is one trend many people are getting on board with! We’re seeing people leave the white cabinets and move towards blues and greens for their kitchen cabinets and even their kitchen islands.

Retro Appliances have slowly made their way back into many peoples apartment buildings, we’re seeing more older refrigerator’s, stoves, and hood ranges. Along with retro cooking products like mixers, toaster ovens, and toasters.

Checkered Flooring this is one trend we’ve currently seeing in more kitchens and mudrooms in the last few years. This trend has started with the typical black and white squares and now has expanded to coloured squares as well.

Decor

A new trend we’re also seeing is using vintage items as decor throughout a modern home and mixing and matching the products together.

One example is the French mirror comeback. The French mirror or the trumeau is a mirror is set into tall wooden frames with a large section of painted or carved sculptural decoration at the top.

Another decor item is chrome accents placed around rooms- this can be handles, knobs, or faucets and even mirrors. This has been a trend that’s coming back because of the low-maintenance and longevity of these products. These also come in various designs and looks!

Conclusion

We hope this week’s blog post has inspired you to look into adding vintage items to your modern home!
